What is rib cartilage rhinoplasty?
Rib (costal) cartilage rhinoplasty uses a small piece of cartilage taken from a lower rib through a short incision under the chest. It is the most abundant and strongest source of your own cartilage for nose surgery.
It is the preferred material when septal cartilage has been used up or is too weak, such as after previous surgery, for significant lengthening, or for rebuilding a collapsed bridge.
| Surgery time | About 3–4 hours |
|---|---|
| Anaesthesia | General anaesthesia |
| Donor site | Short incision under the chest |
| Splint & stitches | Removed after about 7 days |
| Stay in Seoul | About 10–14 days |
| Final result | 12 months |
When rib cartilage is recommended
- Revision rhinoplasty with little septum left
- Short or contracted nose that needs lengthening
- Collapsed or saddle-shaped bridge
- Removal of an implant and rebuild with own tissue
- Very weak tip cartilage needing strong support
Rib cartilage can warp if not prepared carefully. Dr. Yoo carves grafts from the centre of the cartilage to minimise this.

How rib cartilage rhinoplasty is done
- STEP 01
Harvest
A small piece of rib cartilage is taken through a short chest incision.
- STEP 02
Prepare
Grafts are carved to reduce the risk of warping.
- STEP 03
Rebuild
The septum, tip support and bridge are rebuilt as needed.
- STEP 04
Close
The chest and nose are closed; a splint protects the result.

Expect soreness at the chest donor site for a few days in addition to normal nose recovery.

- Day 1–3 Nose swelling; chest soreness when moving or coughing.
- Day 7 Splint and stitches removed.
- Week 2–3 Bruising fades; chest discomfort eases.
- Month 1–3 Avoid heavy lifting and impact.
- Month 12 Final shape.
