Skin & tip concern
Rhinoplasty for Thick Nasal Skin in Gangnam, Seoul
structure that shows through.
Thick, oily nasal skin can hide tip definition and makes swelling last longer after surgery. At ONYX in Gangnam, Seoul, Dr. Yoo plans thick-skin rhinoplasty around strong cartilage support, so the new shape is pushed through the skin rather than lost beneath it.
- 01 1:1 consultation with the operating surgeon
- 02 3D CT scan & virtual simulation before surgery
- 03 Structure-first design with your own cartilage
- 04 English-friendly support via WhatsApp
Why does thick nasal skin need a different approach?
Thick nasal skin has more soft tissue and oil glands, especially over the tip. It does not shrink-wrap around a smaller framework, so removing cartilage alone can leave a round or undefined result.
For thick skin, ONYX focuses on building a strong, projected framework with your own cartilage and on careful soft-tissue management, which helps definition appear as swelling settles.
| Surgery time | About 1.5–2.5 hours |
|---|---|
| Anaesthesia | General anaesthesia |
| Approach | Open or closed, depending on the tip |
| Splint & stitches | Removed after about 7 days |
| Stay in Seoul | About 7–10 days |
| Final result | 6–12 months (the tip settles last) |
Signs you may relate to
- Your nose skin is thick, oily or has large pores
- Your tip looks round however you contour it
- You were told your skin limits what surgery can do
- A previous rhinoplasty did not show much change
- Swelling lasted a long time after a past procedure
Thick skin is common in Asian, Middle Eastern and African noses. It changes the plan, not your eligibility.

Common causes
- Skin type Thick, sebaceous skin is largely inherited.
- Soft tissue A thick fibrofatty layer between skin and cartilage blurs definition.
- Weak framework Small, soft cartilages cannot push a defined shape through heavy skin.
- Scar tissue After previous surgery, scar can thicken the skin further.
How ONYX plans thick-skin rhinoplasty
- STEP 01
Assess skin
Skin thickness and quality are checked by touch and 3D CT.
- STEP 02
Build structure
A septal extension graft and strut increase projection and support.
- STEP 03
Define
Tip grafts add shape that can be seen through thicker skin.
- STEP 04
Manage healing
Taping and close follow-up help control swelling in the tip.
Thick-skin rhinoplasty recovery
Typical timeline only. Healing varies with the procedure, skin thickness and materials used.
- Day 1–3 Swelling and bruising; the tip is firm and numb.
- Day 7 Splint and stitches removed; taping may continue at home.
- Month 1–3 Swelling decreases, but the tip still looks fuller than final.
- Month 6 Definition becomes clearly visible.
- Month 12–18 Thick skin can take over a year to fully settle.
Thick Nasal Skin in Seoul: your questions answered.
Can I get a defined tip with thick skin?
Usually yes, but definition will be softer than with thin skin and appears more slowly. Strong structure is the key.
Can skin be thinned during surgery?
Limited soft-tissue thinning is sometimes done carefully, but aggressive thinning risks skin damage, so ONYX relies mainly on structure.
Why does swelling last longer?
Thick skin holds more fluid and scars more, so tip swelling can take a year or more to settle.
Are there treatments that help after surgery?
Taping and, in selected cases, medical treatments for oily skin may help. Dr. Yoo advises at follow-up.
Is an implant better for thick skin?
The tip needs cartilage support. An implant may be discussed for the bridge, but the tip is built with your own cartilage.
